Morning(9am-12pm)
The first thing I instinctively do is check my phone and scroll through it for about half an hour or so before I actually get out of bed. Then I used my computer to do work, which I was connected with through bluetooth headphones, until my first class, during which I had to use my computer again to do more work.
The morning didn’t surprise me as much in terms of how much of my daily life requires connected devices. As I don’t typically use an alarm or anything to help get me up in the morning, and my routine is pretty basic and analog, I wasn’t surprised in terms of how many devices I was using. The only thing that was a little thought-provoking is the work on my computer. Because all of my schoolwork is done on my computer, it provides the basis for me to survive at college.
Afternoon(12pm-5pm)
Most of this time was spent going to class and going to and from my dorm. However, I needed my card to do pretty much anything on campus. Without it I wouldn’t be able to eat or even get back into my building. There is also a staggering amount of devices I interact with while in class. My computer, the projector displaying what is being talked about in class, and even the doors to the building which sometimes stay open automatically if you press a button.
What was most interesting about this time is how clear it became that connected devices almost control how I live. For instance, I cannot do anything without my card and using it to scan into places, I cannot do any work without my computer or work through class without devices.
Evening(5pm-11pm)
This time was much of the same as the afternoon. I used my card to get into the dining hall and in and out of my building, used my computer to work, and used my phone, and headphones along with my computer. When it became dark I turned on my lamp through an app on my phone and my hanging lights through a remote control.
Again it became clear that most functions in my day are made possible through the use of devices. Even turning on my lights at night.
Night(11pm-9am)
No devices were used during this time except the standard habit of using my phone before I go to bed.
Conclusion
I have never considered just how many pieces of technology are connected to either the internet or something else I use on a daily basis. And just how integral they are to my overall day-to-day life and even survival in the sense of being able to eat. Through this I have learned there really is no escaping the internet in modern life and even when you don’t realize it, it is still there as you go throughout your day.
